Tips For Looking After Your Flowers
So you’ve received a beautiful flower bouquet at your doorstep. These tips will show you how to keep them beautiful for longer.
- Daily water checks
Replace the vase water with fresh cool tap water, preferably every day, or every second day. Ensure the vase is filled high to promote long lasting flowers.
- Remove excess leaves
Remove leaves, flowers, or branches which fall below the water line. Having these in the water encourages bacteria growth which can shorten the life of your flowers.
- Stem snipping
As some flowers die off, remove them, and cut the stems of flowers remaining at a 45 degree angle to maximise water uptake. A sharp knife or gardening scissors will work best, taking care not to damage or smash the stems.
- Temperature preference
Most flowers are best displayed away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, or on top of televisions or radiators, which give off heat. Most flowers prefer temperatures between 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 22 degrees Celsius) to prevent dehydration.
- Importance of placement
Aside from direct sunlight avoidance, it is also important to place your arrangement away from fruit or the path of cigarette smoke. The ethylene gas is detrimental to many flower types.
- Enjoy your flowers
Taking care of flowers is soothing and relaxing. Enjoy them with all your senses and treat it like a daily blissful ritual.
- Zero waste
If you have any leftover blooms from your bouquet, create little bud vases and place them around your house. That way, you can enjoy them in more rooms than one!
